Seniors College

Seniors College - About Us

Who We Are

Seniors College is a non-profit organization. Student fees are used solely to cover the costs of the operation. Board members are volunteers and facilitators receive a very modest honorarium. Ron Kelly co-ordinates the program provincially from Charlottetown. He is assisted by Tom Rath in Montague and George Lyle in Summerside. All three are essential to the day-to-day operation of the College and provide the personal contact for both students and facilitators.

Where We Are Located

Seniors College operates in Charlottetown, Montague and Summerside and benefits from an affiliation with the University of Prince Edward Island. UPEI is a strong supporter of the concept of life-long learning. Wherever possible, courses are held at UPEI’s beautiful and historic campus, but rapid growth has led to courses being offered in various locations such as community halls and parish centres.

The Courses

Our non-credit courses are taught by seniors for seniors. Experience the joy of learning without the pressure of exams or papers to write. You will meet new friends and you will open your mind to new possibilities in a rapidly changing world.

Courses are offered in three semesters: Fall (beginning in October), Winter (beginning in January), and Spring (beginning in April).  Most courses run once a week for a period of 8 weeks and the class sessions are from 2 to 3 hours in length. The courses for all three semesters are advertised in the media right after Labour Day.  Registration for all courses throughout the year is scheduled soon after in Charlottetown, Montague and Summerside.  If you miss those dates, you can contact the Coordinator and register by phone or email.

Membership

Anyone 50 years or over is eligible to join Seniors College. Previous university or college experience is not required. Membership entitles you to elect the Board of Directors at our Annual General meeting held in October. Certain privileges apply at UPEI such as use of the library and reduced parking fees if you attend courses on campus.

The Cost

A single annual membership fee of $135 allows attendance at as many courses as the student wishes, province-wide, over three consecutive semesters. Some courses have limited enrolment because of space limitations. These courses are offered on a “first come, first served” basis and they are usually filled on Registration Day.  At the moment, we are unable to offer on-line or advance registration.

Our Goals

  • To be responsive to the needs and interests of seniors 50 years and over.
  • To provide stimulating peer learning opportunities for members.
  • To work and develop links with other organizations to further the goals of the College.
  • To initiate and participate in research on subjects that affect seniors’ way of life.
  • To make sure that learning is FUN.
