Respectful Workplace Certificate - 5 Days

Managers and supervisors have legal responsibilities for safe and harassment free workplaces. Organizational leaders set the tone and enhance the culture of an organization or team toward good solutions and good relationships. This five-day unit covers the basics of a respectful workplace. You will assess your organization's approach and your personal contribution to a respectful workplace, improve your communication skills, learn how to build trust while managing difficult conversations, gain skills and tools for sustaining a respectful workplace, and help employees to experience greater satisfaction in their work and workplace relationships.

The five days* are recommended as a unit resulting in "Respectful Workplace" certificate; however you may take any one or more days. Session 2 OR Introduction to Interest-Based Conflict Resolution is a prerequisite for Session 3 and Session 5. All courses are for full credit to the Certificate in Conflict Resolution Studies.
 

Session 1:  Introduction to Creating a Workplace of Respect and Trust

  • Recognize the dynamics of respectful workplaces - identify your organization's current approach - assess your own contribution to respectful workplace- identify essential personal and organizational factors
  • Learn core concerns of a respectful workplace- identify and address core concerns
  • Prevent - Bullying and harassment

 

Session 2:  Use the Key to a Respectful Workplace

  • Identify and satisfy workplace needs- use three perspectives to identify workplace needs (employee, manager, and employer)- listen for the hidden message in communication (I need . . .)
  • Learn cooperative communication skills- use open questions to explore needs- restate negative or blaming language into needs and hopes- search together for solutions
  • Prevent- Overuse or abuse of power

 

Session 3:  Helping Others to Solve Problems Respectfully in Your Workplace

  • Shift from judge to mediator- build capacity by helping employees to solve the problems- create a culture of creativity and openness in problem-solving
  • Follow a process- use a step-by-step approach- be consistent
  • Prevent- Taking sides and negative consequences

 

Session 4:  Holding Crucial Conversations

  • Model respect- use respectful communication- acknowledge different perspectives - provide opportunities for staff learning
  • Coach staff- tutor staff in respectful communication- support staff to rehearse difficult conversations
  • Prevent- Micro managing

 

Session 5:  Tools for Respectful Problem Solving

  •  Learn how new employee expectations impact workplace leaders- discover six key shifts in employee expectations of leaders
    in today's workplace
    -connect employee expectations and core concerns
  •  Use respectful tools for enhanced problem-solving- understand the behaviours that prevent respectful
    problem-solving
    - practice using a One-Text model for group collaboration
    - identify and manage hot buttons - your own and others'
  • Prevent- Trust breakdown
