Interest-Based Facilitation

Interest-Based Facilitation builds on the Interest-Based Conflict Solving Steps learned in the Introduction to Interest-Based Conflict Resolution. This course is for anyone who assists small or large groups in solving problems or resolving conflict. We will focus on applying the interest-based model to workplace, community and volunteer situations ranging from team meetings to public meetings. We will outline the differences between mediation and facilitation and prepare participants to welcome opportunities to resolve problems and conflicts in groups. You will develop self-awareness, increase your ability to work "on your feet", watch your own flow and resistance to group dynamics, and learn to stay centred and grounded in the midst of group energy.

What you will learn

  • apply the interest-based model to group problems and conflicts
  • structure group processes for full participation, increased mutual understanding, and group decision-making
  • listen to "upset" voices and reframe negative comments so other group members can continue to listen and participate
  • prepare yourself for wise facilitation that does not put you in resistance to the group
  • appreciate group conflict as a creative tension toward creative solutions
