The program described below specifies requirements for students wishing to proceed to a Certificate with professional development credit (non-degree). Certificate candidates must complete a total of 210 hours of course work including a final assessment. We suggest that the Certificate process will take a minimum of two (2) years to complete.
However, individual courses in the program are open to students who wish to pursue studies in conflict resolution independently of the Certificate provided they meet course pre-requisites.
Students must complete a total of 210 credit hours. Note: A standard instructional day involves 7 credit hours.
a) 21 hours in Introduction to Interest-Based Conflict Resolution
b) 21 hours in Interest-Based Mediation
c) 21 hours in Interest-Based Negotiation OR Interest-Based Facilitation
d) 21 hours in Understanding Conflict Through Personality Type, OR Getting Unstuck: Dealing with Strong Emotions and Resistance, OR At the End of Your Rope: Unravelling Your Role in Conflict Resolution
e) 21 hours in Ethics in Conflict Resolution
f) 21 hours in Advanced Practice Seminar
g) 21 hours in a Final Assessment** (see #6 below)
*As of March 1, 2010 new registrants in the Certificate program will also be required to complete 21 hours in Advanced Mediation: Preparing Yourself and the Parties for Success.
Forty-two (42) credit hours in any combination are permitted (For those participants registered prior to March 1, 2010 = 63 hours).
Candidates may apply for up to 42 credit hours for courses taken from other recognized institutions or trainers. Introduction to Interest-Based Conflict Resolution and the Final Assessment must be taken at UPEI. If you would like to be considered for the transfer of past credits to be applied towards the UPEI Certificate in Conflict Resolution Studies, please complete the REQUEST FOR CREDIT EQUIVALENCE form and return to the Centre for Conflict Resolution Studies at (fax) 902-566-0451 or mail to the address found at the bottom of this webpage.
Qualified students may substitute an approved research project for one elective.
The Final Assessment is a formal demonstration that certificate candidates can apply negotiation, mediation or facilitation skills in practice. Candidates must successfully complete the Final Assessment in order to qualify for the Certificate in Conflict Resolution Studies.
Eligibility
Students must have completed Introduction to Interest-Based Conflict Resolution, the Advanced Practice Seminar, and have accumulated a total of 147 credits to become eligible for the Final Assessment.
Case Application
Candidates will conduct simulated mediation or facilitation or negotiation to test their practical skills. The following conditions apply

If you must cancel your registration for any reason, please notify the staff immediately at the Centre by calling (902) 566-0336 or email ccrs@upei.ca. Registrants who cancel within 10 days or greater will receive a full refund without any penalty. Registrants who cancel less than 10 days but greater than 5, will be charged a $50.00 cancellation fee and the remaining balance may be refunded or transferred to another course. Registrants who cancel less than five (5) days will be charged a $50.00 cancellation fee and the remaining balance will be transferred to another course. Registrants who cancel one (1) day prior to the course or choose not to attend without cancelling, will not receive a refund or transfer of fees. Transferred fees must be used within 24 months.
Cancellation fees are applied in all cases where advance notice is not provided to the CCRS via phone. Cancellation fees are charged for costs associated with last minute cancellations (facility fees, materials, instructors, cancellation penalties, etc).
The Centre reserves the right to cancel any course for insufficient enrolment. In such cases, registrants will be notified by e-mail or telephone and offered the choice of a full refund or transfer of fees to another course.
Tuition Fees will vary depending on the costs of each course and number of hours. Certificate registrants will have priority for seats.
Full course registration payment is due in advance to complete the registration process.

$50.00 for admission. Application fees are non-refundable.
We accept VISA, MasterCard, cash, cheque, or we can invoice your employer if you provide the person's name, title, and address. Payments must be received ten (10) calendar days prior to a course start date. All cheques are payable to the University of Prince Edward Island.
