Interest-Based Model

What are the key goals and values of the Interest-Based model of Conflict Resolution?

The model's dual objectives are to prevent or resolve conflicts by way of a) good solutions and b) good relations. To achieve these the Centre for Conflict Resolution Studies is committed to the ideals of collaboration and the processes of the interest-based model of which together require full participation, mutual understanding, and inclusive solutions.

In the conduct of our work we are guided by the values of

Credits

What do the credit hours mean?

Each hour of instruction is valued at one credit. Each course day is 7 hours long. A two day course earns 14 credits; a three day course earns 21 credits.
 

How many credits are needed for the Certificate?

210 credits (See Regulations page)
 

Are these credits eligible to count towards a University Degree?

The credits are for professional development (non-academic) programs. They are not part of UPEI academic degree programs. (Equivalency is under study.)

 

Can I get credit for previous training in Conflict Studies?

Yes. Provided that equivalence can be established and that the training was grounded in the interest-based model, up to 42 credits from elsewhere can be transferred.

Courses

How long is a course?

They are given in a workshop format varying from one to three days in length. Each day involves seven hours of instruction and seven credits.

 

Do I have to register for the entire program to take a course?

No. You can take any course provided you meet the course prerequisites.

 

Can I take courses in any order or are there prerequisites I need to take first?

You may take any number of courses which do not have prerequisites. The best place to start is with the Introduction to Conflict Resolution which provides the essential knowledge upon which all other courses build. With the Introduction completed, you are eligible to take all other courses.

 

Do I have to purchase books or manuals?

No, we provide a handbook for every course.

 

Course Locations

What is the location for these courses?

Our Charlottetown courses are usually offered at the UPEI campus at 550 University Avenue or a local motel/hotel. Courses offered in Moncton are located at various locations. You will receive location information within a week of the course start date.

 

The Certificate in Conflict Resolution Studies Program

Must I have a degree to register for the program?

No. This is a professional development program. Participants with a wide range of backgrounds and work experience have profited from our courses. High motivation and a concern for better solutions and better relationships is what really matters.

 

What is required to obtain a Certificate in Conflict Resolution Studies?

210 credit hours made up of core, required and elective courses (see Regulations)

How long will it take to get my certificate?

You can take courses at your own pace within a 3 year period.

 

Do I need to register for the Program Certificate to take courses?

No. Courses can be taken individually as professional development courses. Should you later decide to seek the Program Certificate, credits accumulated can be applied.

 

When should I register for the Program Certificate?

Those wishing to pursue the Certificate stream are advised to sign up when you enroll in the Introduction to Interest-based Conflict Resolution. Additional administration costs may apply if applying for the Certificate Program.

Registering and payment of fees

When can I register for a course?

Anytime. To register for specific courses, please click on the desired course you are interested in, preview the description and click on the REGISTER icon found at the bottom of each COURSE DESCRIPTION. When do I have to pay?

We suggest to make arrangements to pay when registering for each course. Invoicing can be done directly to your employer and is done 5 days prior to the course start date.

 

What are my payment options?

Credit Card, Cheque, Debit Card, Cash, or Invoice

 

Are there group discounts?

Yes. We give a 10% discount to each of three or more participants in a given course from the same company or registered organization. Registrations must be submitted together.

 

Tax receipts

Can I get an income tax receipt for these courses?

Yes. Simply email ccrs@upei.ca

Funding

Does the program qualify for Provincial or Federal Student Loans?

Unfortunately, our program does not qualify for a Provincial or Federal Student Loan, but funding may be available through your local Human Resources Development Canada offices.

 

Professional prospects

Will the Certificate be recognized elsewhere?

Our graduates have been recognized by other certifying organizations such as Family Mediation Canada. Some have been admitted to University Masters programs. While each institution reserves the right of recognition, all our experience to date indicates that our Certificate is fully respected.

 

Upon graduation can I set up a business as a Conflict Resolver?

Yes. With our Certificate in Conflict Resolution Studies, you will be fully qualified to enter into a practice. Many graduates use the Certificate to their advantage in terms of enhancing their existing careers as managers, lawyers, health care professionals, educators, business persons, etc
